2026 Small Business Manufacturer of the Year: J&M Memorials

A memorial honoring the brave men and women of Rowan county

Matthew and Josephine Shoaf are the second-generation owners of J&M Memorials, a memorial and monument (grave marker) family business now entering its third generation.  In 2021, the Shoafs made the decision to return to North Carolina from Virginia to care for Matthew’s parents as they battled cancer-related illnesses. Following the passing of Matthew’s father, Jerry Shoaf, the family faced a defining crossroads: close a business that had served its community for more than 50 years or reimagine its future.

The reimagining began with help from the Veterans Business Outreach Center in Fayetteville NC.  There the Shoafs benefitted from individualized counseling on business acquisition planning, inventory valuation and depreciation, business structure, government contracting, reviewing financial statements, evaluating the purchase of machinery and inventory, and assessing the feasibility of leasing the existing business location.

The business now employs nine individuals, including four full-time employees, with additional family members joining the operation. This growth reflects both increased business volume and the continued commitment to maintaining the company as a family-centered enterprise.  The Shoafs’ leadership, resilience, and commitment to family legacy exemplify entrepreneurial excellence.

The SBA North Carolina District office is pleased to announce J&M Memorials as its 2026 Small Business Manufacturer of the Year. Sarah Espinosa of the VBOC nominated J&M Memorials for this award.
