From Army Service to Historic Restoration in the Nation’s Capital
For Bob Markarian of Northwood, New Hampshire, the path to becoming the 2026 SBA Veteran‑Owned Small Business of the Year was shaped by a lifetime of hard work, curiosity, and craftsmanship. Bob’s entrepreneurial journey began with a simple gift — a bicycle he received at age 10 – which taught him freedom, responsibility, and the value of earning his way. Those early lessons formed the work ethic that guided him throughout his life.
After balancing school, part‑time jobs, and volunteer service, Bob served in the U.S. Army in Europe, later earning his degree from UMass. He then spent eight years teaching industrial arts overseas for the Department of Defense. Upon returning home, he fulfilled his dream of living off his own land in New Hampshire – building his home by hand while teaching woodworking at night.
In 1987, Bob founded Blaine Industries, Inc., dba Architectural Resource Center, a company specializing in architectural hardware. What began as a small shop soon gained national recognition for innovative designs and dedication to aesthetic restoration.
His products have appeared in some of America’s most treasured landmarks including the U.S. Capitol, the White House, Carnegie Hall, as well a dozen state capitols, universities, courthouses and post offices. His craftsmanship extends beyond U.S. borders – from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London to markets across Canada and Europe. According to Bob, his most meaningful project was his contribution to the Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery - honoring service members. Bob’s ingenuity led to a patented window weight design that set new industry standards. Nearly four decades later, Blaine Industries continues to thrive as a trusted resource for preservation professionals.
While proud of his work to preserve the buildings, Bob is even more inspired by the people who maintain them — architects, janitors, contractors, office staff, suppliers and security personnel. “It takes an army to preserve these treasures,” Bob stated. “I’m honored to be part of the team and humbled to be included among those more worthy of recognition.”
During economic challenges, Bob utilized the SBA Express Loan program through TD Bank, along with the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to preserve jobs and maintain operations. Most recently, he has worked with SCORE, an SBA resource partner, to develop a comprehensive succession plan.
Bob and the other SBA Award winners from New Hampshire will be honored at the SBA’s 2026 Small Business Week celebration on Thursday May 7, 2026 at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, 2 Institute Dr, Concord, NH 03301 from 4:30-6:30 pm.
