In 1843, Simon Huber left Baden‑Baden, Germany with his family and a vision for a new life on 80 fertile acres in Southern Indiana. He planted apple trees—simple beginnings that would grow into a thriving agritourism, food, and beverage legacy more than 180 years later. What started as a way to feed the family (and a few neighbors) has evolved into a multigenerational empire rooted in innovation, hospitality, and deep agricultural tradition.

Today, fifth‑generation leaders Dana and Ted Huber carry that legacy forward through Huber Winery & Starlight Distillery. Since producing their first wines in 1978, Huber Winery has become one of Indiana’s largest wineries, with more than 80 acres of grapes grown, produced, and bottled on-site. Their portfolio includes classic European varietals and seasonal fruit wines—apple among them—a nod to the orchard that started it all.

By 2000, the family was ready to expand once again. An 80‑gallon pot still became the foundation of Starlight Distillery, which has since grown into a nationally acclaimed producer crafting more than 18,500 barrels of spirits annually. Among them: an American Bourbon recognized by the San Francisco International Tasting Alliance as the World’s Best Bourbon.

The last five years have marked a period of remarkable momentum. Distribution has expanded into 15 additional states, staff has grown by 25%, and the business is exploring export opportunities through Indiana’s SBA‑backed programs—all despite challenging conditions in the broader beverage alcohol market.

The Hubers are not only committed to their craft but to their community. They champion agritourism, elevate the profile of family‑owned businesses, and serve on industry, university, and economic development boards. Their advocacy emphasizes smart growth, creativity, and balanced regulation across agriculture—from production and manufacturing to destination and retail. Their leadership has earned them statewide recognition: Dana was named 1SI Chamber & Economic Development’s 2025 Woman of the Year in Manufacturing, and in 2026, she and Ted were honored as SBA Indiana Small Business Persons of the Year.
