With strategic support from SBA programs, Superior Baking Company modernizes operations and secures a thriving future.

Founded in 1920, Superior Baking Company has been a cornerstone of the Brockton business community for over a century.

Operating out of a 16,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and retail store, the fourth-generation family-owned business continues to serve the Northeast region with high-quality artisan breads, fulfilling both large-scale orders and custom baking needs.

In 2019, the company’s legacy took an auspicious turn when Michael Matook joined his wife Cindy Ferrini-Matook and her brother, Joey Ferrini, in taking full control of the bakery.  Michael’s relationship with the Ferrini family began much earlier—he first stepped into the bakery at 16, working part-time and forming lifelong connections that eventually led to marriage and leadership within the business.

Shortly after new ownership of the business was implemented, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, threatening the future of the company. Demonstrating adaptability and tenacity, the leadership team secured federal assistance through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). They also utilized the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance WorkShare Program to retain staff while allowing them to access essential benefits.

In 2024, Michael completed the SBA’s THRIVE Emerging Leaders Program, which proved pivotal in helping him implement critical changes in business culture, operations, and financial practices.

The company also partnered with Manassah Bradley of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center at UMass Amherst’s Mount Ida Campus. This collaboration helped fine-tune the company's transformation and prepare it for generational sustainability.

“Working with MSBDC didn’t just save the business – it strengthened my relationships with my family and business partners,” Matook reflected.

Today, Superior Baking Company is experiencing its most successful period in recent history. Post-pandemic, the company has seen a 20% increase in sales, upgraded its production facility and equipment, and implemented modern operational tools and workflows. Employees are now cross-trained, wages have increased, and comprehensive HR policies and benefits have been introduced – contributing to a healthier, more efficient workplace culture.

Key clients include long-standing partners such as The Italian Kitchen, Cape Cod Café, City Fresh Foods, and Elior North America, along with various regional bread distributors.

Community commitment remains central to the company’s mission. Superior Baking donates products to local food pantries and farms and maintains a deep connection to its neighborhood. A majority of its workforce comes from the Cape Verdean community and resides in the surrounding Brockton area.

In recognition of its resilience and continued excellence, Superior Baking Company was named the 2025 Massachusetts Small Manufacturer of the Year during National Small Business Week.
